I got really frustrated today when I added an application to my Facebook account by accident, well half accident. Adding the app was not the frustrating part. Deleting the application from my account is what got to me. There is no apparent way to do it. After a search on Google I found out how to do it. If your here to find out how to delete apps from Facebook see bellow.

What I found very interesting was the number of apps I had in my account. There were tons of them and some of them were very old. Most of these apps I no longer use so why should they still have access to my account. I started deleting them. Facebook does not provide a fast way to delete unused apps though. It takes three clicks to get rid of them and you have to do it for each app. What a PAIN! One more reason to use Facebook less. I know I can simply not allow sites to add the apps in the first place but that part is easy for them and for me.

How to delete a Facebook Application

Logg in to Facebook, click on the Account button at the top right of the page and then select the option that says “Privacy Settings.”

Once you have done this, near the bottom left of the page, click on the link that says “Edit your settings.”

Now, in the “Apps you use” area, click on the application you’d like to remove. If you don’t see the application listed, you can find it by clicking the Edit Settings button at the right extreme of this area.

Once you have clicked on the application’s icon, You will see a screen with the settings for that application. On that page, click the “Remove app” link. The system will ask you to confirm the action, and then the application will be removed from your account, which means that it will no longer have access to your data.

I have just started planning and layout out the new design for Upright Coffee New York. Its going to be a really fun project as there will need to be an e commerce section added as well as a bunch of new content. First things first, I need to create a new look.

The current design of Upright Coffee’s web site is a modified theme that really has not distinct personality. The idea was to allow the posts to create a nice visual wall that would grab the viewers attention. This actually works pretty well but now the Upright brand really needs to start working on its own. Stay tuned.

I just spent the last few hours trying to find a simple editor for PDF files that will let me type text on top of a scanned file. I tried everything. For some reason I cant even seem to find a trial version of Adobe Acrobat online. I didn’t want to pay $60 for such a simple thing. Then I came across a small application called formulatepro hosted on google here http://code.google.com/p/formulatepro/

This is a super simple app that allows you to type pdf’s as well as draw simple shapes. You can adjust the font and color, all the basic text tools that apple includes in its text editor. The basics but its exactly what I needed and free!

The ides ia that there are different virtual butterflies all over japan that you can only see with the iButterfly app installed on your iPhone. When you see a butterfly you can capture it to your iPhone and add it to your collection. I only wish I could try it in the US. Hopefully we will see a US version of this iPhone app soon.

I’ve been searching for a way to stylize a <select> drop down menu with only css. I’m working on a site that wont allow me to use any Javascript. My first choice would be to use jQuery but on this project the rule is, no jQuery!

I’ve come up with a solution that works in an acceptable way in styling the <select> dropdown relatively well across modern browsers. The one exception is Opera. Some more work will be needed to get this to work well in Opera as it does not like to take the background color when the dropdown is activated. For now I have simply made the text lightly gray so it will still be visible when Opera uses a white background on click.

What I have done is use a holder div that is shorter then the <select> dropdown and hides the overflow. Then I use an image of an arrow as a background. Its actually quite simple and works pretty well for my current needs. Give it a shot and see how it works for you. Any suggestions for improvement would be great, or any ideas as to how to get this to work in Opera.

There are some hacks for IE in this code. I would definitely pull them out into IE specific css files for production.

Demo of the dropdown »

In production in an ASP environment I experienced some visual issues in older Firefox and different version of IE. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some screen grabs of my css only dropdown.

I had the pleasure of designing and coding the blog for Beautylish.com. Beautylish is a site “to discover, talk, and learn about makeup and beauty products!” The blog was used as a buzz generator before the full launch of the Beautylish site and continues to broadcast company information and makeup news.

The blog is a custom WordPress theme as well as an optimised install of WordPress for SEO. Google Beautylish and see for yourself :)

Social good with Qenso

I had the great opportunity to design and code www.Qenso.com. Qenso is a site the helps users create and sponsor socially conscious actions. It feels very gratifying to work on a site with such a great cause.

For this project I was brought in to art direct and design all the pages as well as consult on the user interaction. I also coded all the front end HTML CSS. This was a really fun project that required a lot of simplification of complex ideas for the user.

Printing from the Apple iPad.

My family bought me an iPad for my birthday. Its a great gift. At first I thought I would not really use it but now I find that I’ll pick up the iPad most of the time rather then opening up my MacBook when I am not doing real design work. It works perfectly for most simple tasks, especially going through my RSS feeds. The one piece that is really missing and would make the iPad much more useful to me is the ability to print to my networked printer. I’ll often grab my iPad to look up direction but since i cant print them I hit a bit of a wall. I could also love to be able to print airplane tickets an receipts from the iPad. I’m sure some one will eventually come out with the ability to print but I really hope that Apple does it so that I will be able to print from any app.

There are actually a few apps in the iTunes store that say they will allow you to print but none of them seem to offer the flexibility needed for general printing.
